Seaside holiday resort with a large indoor water park: Splash Waterworld

Butlins Minehead is the largest of the three Butlins resorts in the UK — a classic seaside destination in Somerset that combines value-packed Short Break Escapes with a substantial choice of family entertainment, dining, and accommodation. For water lovers, the headline act is Splash Waterworld, an indoor leisure pool complex designed for all ages, featuring a family pool, a lazy river, wave effects and multiple swimming pool water slide attractions. For resort guests, swimming is included in the price and there is no need to book, which makes it easy to fit sessions around shows, fairground rides and other family activities on site.

Thanks to its size and the all-weather cover of Splash Waterworld, Butlins Minehead works year-round for families seeking a family water park experience, whether that is a weekend treat or a longer school-holiday stay. The pool complex sits a short walk from the Skyline Pavilion and the traditional fairground, so it is simple to build a full day of activities without leaving the resort. Day visitors are also welcomed on selected dates, with access that includes Splash Waterworld — ideal if you want a taste of water parks in the UK before committing to a full break.

A downloadable Map of Butlins Minehead helps you plan routes between accommodation villages, the Pavilion, restaurants and Splash Waterworld.

Beyond the pools, Butlins Minehead sits beside a long sandy beach and near Exmoor National Park, placing it within reach of some of the top tourist attractions in the UK’s South West. The resort’s scale, the convenience of swimming being included, and the variety of slides and play spaces make it a strong candidate when families compare the top 10 attractions in the UK for short domestic getaways. In short, Butlins Minehead blends the appeal of a large seaside resort with the reliability of an indoor water park swimming pool — a practical choice for families who want maximum fun with minimal planning.

Seasonal Availability

The resort operates year-round with term-time, school-holiday and Big Weekender programmes. Splash Waterworld is an indoor facility available to resort guests during their break schedule; day visits run on selected dates — always check dates and on-resort opening times before travelling.

Attractions & Features

Main Attractions

Splash Waterworld in Butlins Minehead is a large indoor leisure pool complex built for all-weather fun. The headline experiences are a family-friendly lazy river, a main pool with a wave machine, and multiple flumes that range from gentle to high-speed. For resort guests there is no need to book and swimming is included in the price of your break, which makes planning very straightforward. Day visitors on selected dates also get pool access as part of their pass.

Special Rides

  • Master Blaster (raft flume) — twist, turn and splash your way down in a raft; height 1.1 m+ (ages 5–7 must ride with an adult).
  • Black Hole — a classic high-speed enclosed slide; height 1.1 m+.
  • Space Bowl — spin around a giant bowl before a plunge into a 2 m exit pool; 8 years+, 1.2 m+, confident swimmers only.
  • Blue Comet — a fast, narrow flume with a ~14-second ride time; height 1.0 m+.

These are the signature Splash Waterworld Minehead rides and provide a good spread of thrills for older children and teens.

Kids & Family Areas

Families with younger children will appreciate that the pool space is split into zones. There is a shallow toddler pool with sprinklers and a small slide for little ones, plus a rectangular swim area that leads into the lazy river and wave zone — ideal for building water confidence at your own pace. In summer there is also an outdoor paddling pool for toddlers. Depths are family-friendly: the lazy river is around 1.0 m and the main pools are up to 1.4 m.

Relaxation Areas

For a slower tempo, drift along the lazy river or use quieter times (typically afternoons) to enjoy gentler swimming with the family. Butlin’s publishes a simple “traffic light” guide showing when the pool is busiest — queues likely from opening to 12pm, normally busy 12pm–2pm, and best time to swim 2pm–close.

Unique Features

  • All-included access during your stay at Butlins Minehead — a key difference versus many standalone water parks in the UK.
  • A broad spread of experiences under one roof — from a family water park swimming pool with a wave machine to headline flumes like Space Bowl and Master Blaster.
  • Practical family design: clear height rules, companion policies for non-swimmers, and a layout that flows from shallow play to deeper, more adventurous zones.
  • Resort-wide convenience: pair your swim with on-site family activities, dining and shows, or plan a beach walk just over the road.

Baby & Infant Facilities

Baby Changing Facilities

Splash Waterworld at Butlins Minehead offers large mixed changing areas with family cubicles and £1 coin lockers — handy when you are juggling little ones. In addition, the resort has a brand-new Changing Places facility next to SKYPARK, equipped with a ceiling hoist, adult-sized height-adjustable bench and accessible shower — ideal for guests who need extra space and specialist equipment.

Bottle-Warming Stations

While bottle-warming is not advertised inside Splash Waterworld itself, Butlins Minehead provides bottle warmers at selected dining venues, alongside highchairs and baby cutlery — useful before or after your swim. Most family restaurants sit a short walk from the pool within the Skyline Pavilion area, making feeds straightforward to plan around your water time.

Baby Pools

For babies and toddlers, Splash Waterworld Minehead includes a shallow tots’ zone with sprinklers and a small slide, separated from deeper water. Families also highlight an outdoor toddler paddling pool in summer. Depths are friendly for grown-ups supervising early splashes — the lazy river is around 1.0 m and the main pools are up to 1.4 m. Together, they create a gentle, confidence-building leisure pool experience inside a genuinely family water park.

Minimum Age Restrictions

For pool entry, children under 8 must be accompanied in the water by an adult (18+; 16+ if the parent) at a ratio of 1 adult to 2 children. Non-swimmers or weak swimmers under 14 must also be accompanied in the water. These rules apply throughout Splash Waterworld — plan your adult-to-child ratios accordingly if you have more than one little one.

Swim nappies

Butlins pool guidance requires non-toilet-trained children to wear swim nappies with snug-fitting waterproof covers. This is explicitly stated in pool FAQs for other Butlin’s resorts and reflects standard practice — please check on-site signage or the Butlins app for Minehead-specific confirmation on your break.

Handy notes for parents

  • Lockers take a £1 coin — useful for stowing a changing bag and spare towels.
  • Family changing rooms are available; arriving a few minutes early helps you secure a larger cubicle.
  • If you prefer to feed outside the water space, nearby dining venues offer baby-friendly facilities including bottle warmers.

Daily Schedule

It’s a pretty cool pool complex. Nice little outdoor pool that’s open in the summer, not at all deep, ideal for kids and toddlers who absolutely loved it. Head on inside and you get the main pool and the variety there. Jacuzzi/Bubble Pool, 3 different water slides, wave machine and a lazy river. Would have liked more space to actually swim properly but the standard 25m pool was somewhat overcrowded when I went.

Fantastic pleasure pool. A variety of slides, big lazy river, tots splash areas. plus a 25m pool for actual swimming.

The slides are for 1m plus and the child has to go down on their own. Age guide 5 yreas. Can go accompanied on the blaster in a raft which is good fun, but needs to be 1.1m tall for that.

Midweek afternoons the pool was plenty busy with 20 minute wait for most slides. Can imagine it can be a lot longer at peak .

General pool area felt clean. Life guards fantastic and maintained a good level of behaviour in the pool.

Lots of showers. Actual changing rooms quite cramped and floor dirty in high traffic areas but no worse than many a pool.

Great pool with plenty to offer, especially when it comes to slides.

However, the changing rooms were extremely hot some proper air conditioning would definitely make a big difference. It made getting changed uncomfortable, especially after swimming.

Overall, the pool itself was enjoyable, though a few reworks or updates wouldn’t go amiss to bring it up to top standards…

However it’s in a great spot, and makes Butlin’s that little more enjoyable ! 🙂

It was okay is very costly and the reception is to charge us extra for the children. Normally we are three people but she charged us as a four people but when I realise that and ask them she can’t refund so end up with paying for people when you are just three, they need more system to go like the book tickets Either a touchscreen or something else but the experience in inside was good

  • Included access for resort guests — no booking required. Pool time at Splash Waterworld Butlins Minehead is part of your break and you do not need to reserve sessions. Day visitors are welcome on selected dates and will be allocated a swim time on arrival to manage capacity.
  • Supervision ratios. In any pool area there must be one adult to two children for any child under 8, and the same ratio applies to any weak or non-swimmer under 14. Children under 8 must be supervised in the water and changing rooms by an adult. Plan your group accordingly.
  • Swim nappies. All children who are not toilet-trained (or are under 2) must wear a clean swim nappy with snug-fitting waterproof swim pants over the top.
  • Swimwear and accessories. Shorts up to three-quarter length are allowed. If you wear leggings, full-body swimwear or T-shirts for religious reasons, these must be clean and tight-fitting with a costume worn underneath. Goggles and some jewellery are allowed but must be removed on the flumes. Snorkels are not permitted.
  • Inflatables and aids. Lilos, boats, beach balls and inflatable animals are not permitted. Swimming aids such as armbands, baby swim seats and small baby rings are allowed.

  • Lockers and changing. Family changing is available. Lockers require a £1 coin (refundable). Spectators are not allowed poolside; limited viewing is from the balcony when open.

Ride-Specific Rules

Slide-by-slide requirements at Splash Waterworld Butlins Minehead

  • Master Blaster (raft flume) — Minimum height 1.1 m. Children aged 5–7 must ride with an adult in the raft. Exit channel depth ~0.2 m.
  • Black Hole (enclosed flume) — Minimum height 1.1 m. Exit channel depth ~0.2 m.
  • Space Bowl — Minimum age 8+, height 1.2 m+, confident swimmer required due to a 2.0 m plunge pool.
  • Blue Comet — Minimum height 1.0 m; described as thin, fast and narrow with a ~14-second ride; exit channel depth ~0.2 m.

Who can ride and how supervision works

  • Under-8s must be accompanied in the water by an adult (18+; if the parent, 16+) at a ratio of 1 adult : 2 children. Non- or weak swimmers under 14 must also be accompanied in the pool. These supervision rules apply throughout the leisure pool and flumes.

General flume rules to expect

  • Loose items — for safety, goggles, bracelets, necklaces and other loose items are not permitted on the flumes. Secure or remove jewellery before queuing.
  • Fitness to ride — anyone with certain conditions (for example heart or back problems), pregnant guests, or those under the influence of alcohol or drugs must not use the flumes. Always follow lifeguard guidance and on-site signage.
  • Ride marshals & lifeguards — the pool is staffed by qualified lifeguards; you must follow their instructions, queue signage and any posted restrictions that may vary by day or operating conditions.

Practical tips for families

  • If you have a child in the 5–7 bracket who meets the 1.1 m requirement, plan for an adult to share the Master Blaster raft — this helps manage ratios and keeps the queue moving.
  • Confident-swimmer slides such as the Space Bowl end in deeper water. If your party includes mixed abilities, try the Blue Comet or Black Hole first, then progress — you will still get the swimming pool water slide thrills without the 2 m plunge.

Visitor Tips

Best Time to Visit

  • Afternoons are typically calmer — families often swim earlier in the day, so aim for a later slot to enjoy Splash Waterworld with fewer queues.
  • School holidays vs term time — if you prefer a quieter family water park experience, consider term-time “Showtime” breaks. If you want maximum atmosphere and extended programming, school-holiday dates deliver more shows and activities across Butlins Minehead.
  • Check your break type — family breaks and Butlin’s Weekenders (adult-only) have different vibes and timetables. If you are travelling with children, choose a standard family break rather than an adult weekend.
  • Weather back-up — the beach is across the road, but the pool is indoors. If the forecast turns, lean into the indoor leisure pool, Skyline Pavilion shows and SKYPARK.

What to Pack

  • £1 coins for lockers — lockers are coin-operated; keep a couple handy.
  • Two towels per swimmer — one for poolside and one dry spare for later shows or dining.
  • Swim nappies — required for non-toilet-trained children; bring spares plus a waterproof cover.
  • Goggles & caps — allowed for general swimming; remove goggles and loose jewellery before swimming pool water slide queues.
  • Flip-flops and a light robe — make changing easier with little ones.
  • Reusable water bottle — ask venues for tap-water refills when you break for lunch.
  • Phone protection — bring a zip-pouch; photography is not permitted in the pool area, so plan to store your device securely.

With babies and toddlers

  • Go slow and shallow — use the toddler splash area first to build confidence.
  • Feed before or after — nearby restaurants offer highchairs and baby-friendly options; plan feeds outside the pool session.
  • Family cubicles — arrive a touch earlier than your ideal time to secure a larger changing cubicle.

For older kids and teens

  • Set a slide sequence — try a warm-up on Blue Comet, then Black Hole, then the Master Blaster raft. End on the Space Bowl if they are 1.2 m+ and strong swimmers.
  • Agree a meeting point — inside the resort, pick a visible landmark after your swim before you split for snacks or the arcade.

Accessibility tips

  • Changing Places facility — located by SKYPARK; if you need hoist or bench access, visit here first and plan your route to the pool.
  • Contact ahead — if you require adapted accommodation, parking or assistance, inform Guest Services before your break.

Day-visitor strategy

  • Book in advance — day passes include a pool session; you will receive a swim time on arrival.
  • Arrive early — park up, collect your wristbands, and explore the Pavilion until your swim slot.
  • Set expectations — you will cover a lot in one day, but the resort is large; focus on Splash Waterworld, one or two shows, and a fairground session.

Budget & value

  • Included access — for staying guests, Splash Waterworld is included in your Butlins Minehead price, which compares well with standalone water parks in the UK that charge per session.
  • Meal planning — consider a dining plan if you want fixed costs; otherwise mix a sit-down venue with quick-service options.
  • Short Break Escapes — midweek breaks can be excellent value outside peak weeks.

Safety first

  • Ratios matter — one adult for every two children under 8, and accompany non- or weak swimmers under 14 in the water.
  • Read the board — check height markers and rules at each slide entrance.
  • Listen to lifeguards — they will adjust operations if the pool gets busy or conditions change.

Small wins that make a big difference

  • Pack a small dry bag for keys, coins and wristbands.
  • Stagger meals — eat slightly earlier or later than the crowd to avoid queues and slot in an off-peak swim.
  • Layer your day — beach in the morning, Splash Waterworld mid-afternoon, showtime in the evening — a simple flow that works well at Butlins Minehead.
